Well, and they seemed to push the micki romance angle more with Johnny than Ryan. It struck me as a little fake, not natural.

Dominus- Everything always seemed more natural between Micki and Ryan. Those two just bounced off each other perfectly... and many viewers love that type of onscreen chemistry.
Scooter- I know this is a VERY late reply to your 2008 comment on the M&R Romance topic but I wanted to point out that you seem to be ignoring a few facts. It is a fact that Ryan had a slight crush on Micki during the first season. Indeed that appeared to fade over time...but it was made clear in episodes such as The Inheritence, Cupid's Quiver, and especially in Badge of Honor when Ryan admits to being jealous of Tim..stating Tim was "too much competition". As for Micki's feelings....she appeared to have grown fonder of Ryan over time, but its hard to say just how much.
I will admit that we who enjoy the idea of M & R being romantically linked may sometimes over-interpret what we saw between those two...I know this because I have actually watched the show with an open mind about it...on purpose. I decided to re-watch both Seasons 1 and 2 with the "they are just family/friends" point of view and I was surprised to find that at times I misread what was actually going on. You are correct that many times in the show there is absolutely nothing remotely romantic being implied. However, there are also times that no matter how you view it, there just seems to be something MORE between them than just friendship(such as in those episodes I mentioned earlier).
I totally find it amazing how well the writers kept us hooked on M&R's "ambiguous" relationship. Maybe it was intentional? Maybe they would throw in a dash of romance here and there to keep us wondering and tuning in. Lets face it, despite the awesomeness of the cursed objects and thoroughly entertaining storylines, many of were anxiously waiting to see what would become of Micki, Jack, and Ryan. If you've got a great cast, with as much chemistry as this one, you are likely to tune in more for THEM than anything else. So I think keeping us in suspense about the whole thing was brilliant if it was indeed intentional.

Here's my big confession - I like Johnny. I never saw F13:TS during it's original run. I caught an episode now and again, reruns on cable TV. For some reason, the episodes I usually caught had Johnny. Only once in a while did I see an episode with Ryan. I liked Johnny 'cause the character was simple, honest, and he seemed like a tough guy.
Back then, when ever I caught an episode with Ryan, frankly I always thought he was kind of wussy compared to Johnny. OK, OK, that was then. I see now that he was a different kind of hero and I've come to appreciate that difference. And having seen the episodes in sequence, I see now how Ryan's character was integral to him jumping in feet first to join the hunt for the cursed objects.
But back when I was watching the reruns, I didn't know the history of the characters or the mythology, mostly 'cause the episodes I saw were all disconnected. I watched them strictly for the narrative story of that particular episode and Robey's mass of red hair.
Then, for years and years, I never saw another episode. One day last year, there was a book sale at my work and on a shelf was a DVD of the first season, going for $2. I saw Robey on the back and said to myself, "Hey, that's that lady with the big red hair!" I had to buy it.
Now, I have gotten totally into the show that I already liked, I enjoy the chemistry among the original trio, the bond that developed between Ryan and Micki. In short, I came around to really liike Ryan, but I still like Johnny.
Just finished watching The Prophecies, and I have to admit the final scene, when you know Ryan is gone, well, I got pretty sad. But it was fun to see Johnny again.
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm looking forward to seeing Johnny as a regular character, though, honestly, Ryan's presence is missed in those later episodes.

Johnny was *alright*, but he carried himself like he thought he was the hottest thing on the planet. I know it turned me off, personally. Still, I can't fully hate on him, like I said, because he's still all up in the show, and I have yet to see a good bulk of Season 3 on my bigger than a computer small screen, so maybe he'll win me over. We'll see, I suppose.

No disagreement there.. And that hair, some episodes I think he beat Micki for biggest hair.

Well, dude was from Jersey. Robey was from the world, really, so the big hair was fully classy.

Just watched "Crippled Inside," a full on Johnny episode. I have to say I really liked it. I doubt it will ever be an Episode Club choice, but I liked it. Some good acting in that episode. Loved Micki's scarf look in her one brief scene, too.
I get the whole missing Ryan thing, though. But I do think the writers do a good job of demonstrating again and again that Johnny is no Ryan.. He certainly doesn't display the same sense of mission that Ryan does in recovering the cursed objects. But I guess that makes sense. Ryan said more than once that he had a responsibilty to recover the items. I don't know yet what Johnny's motiviation is for doing the same thing, other than maybe he likes the action.
Maybe it becomes clearer in a later episode I haven't seen yet.

Maybe it becomes clearer in a later episode I haven't seen yet. I think Johnny is motivated by two things: the action and the fact that he, like the other three, had seen too many people die as a result of a cursed object. His second motivation became stronger when his own father was killed by someone who not only used a cursed object, but framed him for his father's murder in the process.

I just watched wedding bell blues. It made me rethink Johnny a bit. In that episode at lease, he struck me as a guy sorta over-compensating for lack of confidence. He's willing to take major risks to look 'cool'. It also seemed to me like his false bravado was to impress Micki. Like a guy trying to do what he thinks girls dig. Like a guy without a lot of experience with the ladies. Maybe a late bloomer socially. I'll have to keep an eye on him in season 3 before I form my overall opinion. But I like him a bit more than I used too, with my new retrospect.
